Horizons Golf Resort is Port Stephens championship golf built around water, strategy and spectacular local wildlife. Graham Marsh and Ross Watson designed the 18-hole course, opened in 1992, to weave for 6,187 metres through an intricate lake system at Salamander Bay. The result is beautiful, highly ranked and very capable of turning one optimistic carry into aquatic archaeology. Members, guests and visitors can play seven days a week, with nine and 18-hole options, carts, club hire, driving range, competitions, golf shop, clubhouse dining, functions and nearby accommodation.

Waters, slick bentgrass greens and sculptured bunkers define the place; tight tree-lined fairways reward accuracy while wetlands and carries force strategic thinking. Firm fairways and true putting surfaces make smart shot placement and a sharp short game essential for a satisfying round.

Playing tip: Favour left-centre and allow extra club into the long green.
Playing tip: Shape the drive away from the right bunker and respect the sloping green.
Playing tip: Play for position, and lay up if the narrowing approach is not inviting.
Playing tip: Long-left is the safest miss around the heavily bunkered green.
Playing tip: Choose position from the tee; the landing area tightens before the green.
Playing tip: Take enough club over the water and avoid the deep left bunker.
Playing tip: Decide early whether to attack or lay up above the second landing area.
Playing tip: Use the safer right fairway unless the carry over the centre bunkers suits.
Playing tip: Find the short grass between the new fairway bunkers before attacking.
Playing tip: Allow extra club to the elevated green and keep the approach below the hole.
Playing tip: Favour left from the tee, then miss the green long-left rather than right.
Playing tip: Lay back from the tempting mound and leave a controlled short-iron approach.
Playing tip: Use the left lay-up line to open the angled approach beyond the bunker.
Playing tip: Position short of trouble, then favour a controlled approach away from the water.
Playing tip: Allow for wind and keep the tee shot away from the water on the left.
Playing tip: Aim at the left bunker with a fade and prefer the short-left miss.
Playing tip: Trust the distance; left, right and long all demand difficult recoveries.
Playing tip: Lay up 50 to 100 metres short unless the wind makes the green comfortably reachable.
